— In a case of terrible timing, CBS Sports’ website crashed on Thursday morning, leaving many college basketball fans in the lurch on the first day of the tournament.

When thousands of fans logged on to the website to submit last-minute brackets, they found the website had gone down around 11 a.m. It remained down for about two hours, which angered fans because the first game tipped off at 12:15.

And fans let CBS Sports know about it on Twitter.

“During the hour before the first tip, service was down due to overwhelming demand,” CBS Sports Digital said in a statement. “We certainly regret the outage but are pleased to say that service has since been restored.”

— Mike Francesa explained his Wednesday mix-up when he mistakenly previewed an NCAA basketball game between Maryland and Florida State, which did not exist. He got confused about which conference Maryland belongs to and said he was distracted during the show.

“I was kind of responding to something I had to respond to, and I should have gone to commercial, but I didn’t,” Francesa said on Thursday. “And I was just basically not paying attention to the show for two minutes there when I was talking about Maryland, and I should not have done that. My fault, bad job, so it’s bad audio, but here’s the bottom line, they report it, and they report it completely erroneously!”

Francesa explained his son had been in an accident and his wife was texting him that he was back in school. He also said news outlets got the story wrong because he actually said Maryland was playing Xavier.

According to the audio of him saying it, Francesa did say Florida State.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I don’t watch it. I go to sleep. It’s tough because I want to go out and represent my country, but I couldn’t do it. So it’s tough, yeah.” — Hanley Ramirez, to on not playing in the World Baseball Classic
